This painting is inspired by the ever-popular poster "OBEY" by artist Shepard Fairey. The OBEY campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. Phenomenology is defined as "the process of letting things manifest themselves." "Phenomenology attempts to enable people to see clearly something that is right before their eyes but obscured; things that are so taken for granted that they are muted by abstract observation," Shepard Fairey 1990. Since itÕs origination "Obey" has been plastered across the nation in poster-form, spreading the message of the artist. The intent of the original painting is to derive a reaction from humans, while Nathan Janes' "Obedience" is directed towards dogs. Posters of "Obedience" are commonly found near hydrants, tree stumps, and car tires, locations obvious to the sight of all dogs.
